Scrappy Hearts Lap Quilt

Scrap quilts are a good way to use leftover fabric from other projects. You can make this quilt out of cotton fabric or if you want extra warmth make it out of flannel.
What you need:
Note: Yardage is based on 115cm (45”) wide fabric
Sewing machine
¼" Piecing Foot
Open Toe Foot
Edge/Joining Foot
Dual Feed Foot or a machine that has this feature integrated in the machine
Free-motion foot
30cm (⅓ yd) each of 9 assorted cotton or flannel in medium to dark shades for large and small 9-Patch blocks, large and small triangles

80cm (1 yd) blue print fabric for heart top and binding

70cm (¾ yd) beige fabric for background of heart blocks

25cm (¼ yd) solid or tone on tone fabric for narrow border

1.6m (1¾ yds) cotton fabric for backing
1.6m (1¾ yds) cotton batting
Cotton sewing thread
Invisible thread
Wash away marker or pencil
Rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat
Steam iron and Ironing surface
Safety pins
Pins
Thread snips
Cutting Instructions
From seven of the nine assorted cotton or flannel cut the following:
1 - 17.75 x 17.75cm (7” x 7”) cut on the diagonal twice, yields 4A triangles
4 - 11.5 x 11.5cm (4½” x 4½”) C squares
1 - 6.5 x 56cm (2½” x 22”) B strip
2 - 6.5 x 28cm (2½” x 11”) strip for scrap border
From one of the nine assorted cotton or flannel cut the following:
1 - 14 x 14cm (5½” x 5½”) cut on the diagonal twice, yields 4D triangles for quilt top corners
6 - 11.5 x 11.5cm (4½” x 4½”) C squares
3 - 6.5 x 28cm (2½” x 11”) strip for scrap border
From one of the nine assorted cotton or flannel cut the following:
6 - 11.5 x 11.5cm (4½” x 4½”) C squares
1 - 6.5 x 56cm (2½” x 22”) B strip
3 - 6.5 x 28cm (2½” x 11”) strip for scrap border
From blue print fabric for heart top and binding cut the following:
12 - 11.5 x 16.5cm (4½” x 6½”) E heart top
6 - 6.5 x 115cm (2½” x 45”) binding
From beige fabric for background of heart blocks cut the following:
6 - 11.5 x 11.5cm (4½” x 4½”) F squares
24 - 6.5 x 6.5cm (2½” x 2½”) G squares
12 - 4 x 26.5 cm (1½” x 10½”) H strips
12 - 4 x 31.5 cm (1½” x 12½”) I strips
From solid or tone on tone fabric for narrow border cut the following:
5 - 4 x 115 cm (1½” x 45”) narrow border
Creating Your Quilt
This simple to piece lap quilt is made up of the following blocks.




Sew
All seams are sewn with a (6mm) ¼” seam allowance. Thread your sewing machine with cotton sewing thread on top and on the bobbin. Attach the ¼” Piecing Foot and select a straight stitch.
Large 9-Patch Blocks (Make 2)
Sew 9 assorted cotton or flannel 11.5cm (4½”) C squares together in horizontal rows and press seam allowances as shown.

Sew the rows together to complete the large 9-patch.
Press seams away from the center.
Repeat for the second large 9-patch.

Large Triangle Blocks (Make 6)
Construct this block in 3 rows.
Mark with a wash away marker the 6mm (¼”) intersecting points on the triangles and squares. Use these marks to match the triangles and squares when pinning the pieces together.
Row 1: pin and sew 2 - 11.5cm (4½”) C squares and 1 A triangle together. Press the seam allowances to the left.
Row 2: pin and sew 1 - 11.5cm (4½”) C square and 1 A triangle together. Press the seam allowance to the right.
Sew the rows together as shown and press the seam allowances according to the arrows.
Repeat the above steps to make 6 large triangle blocks in total.


Small Triangle Blocks (Make 4)
Construct this block in 2 rows.
Mark with a wash away marker the 6mm (¼”) intersecting points on the triangles and squares. Use these marks to match the triangles and squares when pinning the pieces together.
Row 1: pin and sew 1 - 11.5cm (4½”) C squares and 2 A triangles together. Press the seam allowances to the center.
- Row 2: pin and sew 1 D triangle to row 1. Press the seam allowance as shown.
- Repeat the above steps to make 4 small triangle blocks in total.
Note: you will have 2 A triangles leftover, you can discard them.
Heart Blocks (Make 6)
To make the 3 strip sets for the 9-patch block, sew together 3 - 6.5 x 56cm (2 ½” x 22”) B strips and press as shown.



Crosscut the strip sets into 6 segments - 6.5cm (2½”) wide
. 
Arrange the segments into 9-patch blocks and sew together.
Press seam allowances away from the center.
Make six 9-patch blocks.
To make the heart tops draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 24 beige 6.5cm (2½”) G squares with a wash away marker.

Attach the Open Toe Foot for better visibility when following the marked lines.
Position the beige G square on the corners of the
11.5 x 16.5cm (4½” x 6½”) blue print E rectangle as shown.
Stitch diagonally on the marked line.
Trim away excess fabric, leaving 6mm (¼”) seam allowance.
Press the seam allowance toward the beige fabric.
Make 12 heart tops.


Attach the ¼” Piecing Foot.
Sew a beige 11.5cm (4½”) F square to 6 of the heart tops and press the seam allowance towards the beige square.

Sew the 6 remaining heart tops to the 9-patch block. Press seam allowance towards the 9-patch.

Sew the heart block together and press as shown.
Make 6 heart blocks.



Sew a 4 x 26.5cm (1½” x 10½”) H strip to the top and bottom of the heart blocks.
Press seam allowance towards the strip.
Sew a 4 x 26.5cm (1½” x 10½”) H strip to the sides of the heart blocks.
Press seam allowance towards the strip.

Putting it all together
Layout and stitch the quilt top in diagonal rows as shown. Press seam allowances.


Add Borders

Measure the width of the quilt and cut 2 narrow borders that length.
Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt and press towards the border.
Join the remaining 3 narrow borders to make one long strip.

Measure the length of the quilt and cut 2 narrow borders that length.
Sew to the sides of the quilt and press towards the border.
Scrap Border: sew the 6.5 x 28cm (2½” x 11”) assorted strips together end to end to form one long strip
.
Measure the width of the quilt and cut 2 scrap border strips that length.
Sew to the top and bottom of the quilt and press.

Measure the length of the quilt and cut 2 scrap border strips that length.
Sew to the sides of the quilt and press.
Sandwich the Quilt
Lay the quilt backing wrong side up on a flat surface and tape down to hold in place.
Place the batting on top.
Center the completed quilt top right side up on the batting.
Pin through all the layers with safety pins to baste together.
Machine Quilting
Thread your machine with invisible thread on top and cotton thread to match your backing on the bobbin.
Attach Dual Feed Foot or engage the integrated dual feed if your machine has that feature.
Stitch-in-the-ditch (the seam line) be sure to secure your stitch at the beginning and end of each seam. Quilt all the seam lines. Remove the safety pins as you come to them.
Attach the Free-motion foot, refer to your machine’s User’s Guide for instructions on setting up for Free-motion stitching.
Stipple quilt in the beige fabric around the heart to add texture to the background.

Binding the Quilt
Attach the Open Toe Foot and thread your sewing machine with cotton sewing thread on top and on the bobbin.
Select a 3-step zigzag stitch and stitch around the perimeter of the quilt top through all the layers.
Trim away the excess batting and backing.
Attach the ¼” Piecing Foot and select a straight stitch.
Sew the binding strips together end to end to form one long strip.
Fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides facing and press.
Start at the side of your quilt and stitch the binding to your quilt.
Turn the binding to the back of your quilt and pin.
Straight stitch in place from the right side using the Edge/Joining Foot. The flange of the foot rides in the ditch to keep your stitching straight.
